Abstract

During conveyance of bulk maize grain across the drag chain convey system, grain breakage and attrition occurs. This takes place when the grain is pinched at the clearance between the conveyor flight and the conveyor casing. In order to reduce breakage, it is important to first understand the various parameters involved in grain breakage and their individual contribution to the process. In this study, the process of grain breakage was modeled using discrete element method and simulated using Microsoft Visual BasicTM. The model was then validated through experiments carried out at the National Cereals and Produce Board of Kenya. The results showed a grain breakage range of between 1.04 to 4.56 %.
